Introduction

·       It was drafted in 1976 and tabled in parliament but never discussed or adopted

·       The ultimate Aim of NPP is to control and stabilize the population of our country

·       Revised in 1983 and then in 2000 to secure small family norms through voluntary efforts

·       Also focused on moving towards the goal of population stabilization

 

Features of NPP 1976

·       Increase the age of marriage from 15 to 18 (for girls) and 18 to 21 (for boys)

·       Freeze the population figures at 1971 level until 2001

·       To provide central assistance

·       Give greater attention to the education of girls

·       Proper place for the education of peoples

·       Involves all ministries and departments to achieve the goal

·       Increase the monetary compensation for the sterilization

 

Objectives of NPP 2000

·       Immediate objectives

o   Address the unmet needs for

§  Contraception

§  Healthcare infrastructure

§  Health personnel

o   To provide integrated service delivery for basic reproductive and child healthcare

·       Medium term objective

o   To bring TFR (Total Fertility Rate) to replacement levels by 2010 by the help of intersectoral operational strategies

·       Long term objectives

o   To achieve a stable population by 2045

o   To achieve the requirements of sustainable socioeconomic growth & development

o   Environmental protection
