Introduction

  • It can be defined as the arranging, preparing and distributing the medicines to the users with the provision of an appropriate information, follow-up and counselling. 
  • If the dispensing of medicines does not deliver in an effective manner then it can result in the wastage of all patient care activities that were done before dispensing.
  • Good dispensing confirms the delivery of right medicine in right quantity to the right patient at right time.
  • The persons which are involved in dispensing must be trained, skilled & knowledgeable in nature to communicate with patients in an effective manner.

The Dispenser


A person who is authorized & licensed by the authority to dispense the medicines & medical supplies. and should be-
  • Diploma & degree holder in pharmacy profession.
  • Registered pharmacist with Pharmacy Council of India (PCI)
  • Completed his practical training period during the course
  • Good communication, calculation & arithmetic skills
  • Have a knowledge about medicines & assessing the quality of prescription

Dispensing Process


The process of dispensing involves the following steps-
  • Receive & Validate the prescription
  • Understand & Interpret the prescription
  • Select & Label the prescription
  • Final check
  • Issue the medicines to the patient with instructions

Dispensing Errors
 

Any discrepancy between a prescription and the delivered medicines to the patient, the dispensing errors can be-
  • Dispensing to wrong patient
  • Dispensing of wrong medicines
  • Dispensing of wrong drug strength
  • Dispensing in wrong dosage form
  • Dispensing of expired medicines
