Introduction

1) Drug abuse can be defined as the habitual use of any drug to alter the one's mood.

2) The habitual drug intake does not involve any therapeutic purpose.

3) It can affect the state of consciousness and body functions.

4) It can lead to the stage of drug dependency.

5) Commonly abused category of drugs are-

  • Marijuana
  • Cocaine
  • Heroine
  • Alcohol

Types of drug abuse

1) Stimulants

  • These are the drugs that stimulates the brain and the CNS, they increases the state of mental alertness and decrease appetite.
  • Generally stimulants shows the effects like wakefulness, alertness, energy, euphoria etc.
  • Common categories of stimulants are Amphetamines, Cocaine and Nicotine.

2) Depressants

  • These are the drugs that reduces the normal activity of the body functions.
  • Generally depressants shows the effects like sedation, dizziness, hypnosis, anxiety etc.
  • Common categories of depressants are Alcohol, Barbiturates, Cannabis, Opioids and Benzodiazepines.

3) Hallucinogens

  • These are the substances that alters the sensory processing in the brain and cause perceptual disturbances in thought processing.
  • Generally hallucinogens shows the effects like hypothermia, pupil dilation, saliva production, weakness, tachycardia etc.
  • Common categories of hallucinogens are LSD, PCP, Ketamine, Magic mushroom, Mescaline and Ayahuasca.

4) Narcotics

  • These are the substances that are obtained from Papaver somniferum and commonly used as analgesic.
  • Generally narcotics shows the effects like respiratory depression, pneumonia, hypotension etc.
  • Common categories of narcotics are Morphine, Heroine and Codeine.

  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Dilated pupils
  • Secretive behavior
  • Changes in appetite
  •  Changes in sleep pattern

  • Loss of coordination
  • Poor judgement
